Summary
"Jacob’s Journals – Veil": Jacob describes to Doc how, when he first came to America, he was an exotic object of sexual desire for a few, but ignored by many – as though he was wearing a veil. He also writes of how people in general have perceived him, referring to a woman who offered him her grocery bags to carry. Finally, he describes the appearance of a beautiful woman all in silver, including a veil, who appeared to him while he was at the orphanage. He later learned, he says, that the woman was Saint Catherine of Alexandria, one of the many Arab saints that the Italy-based Catholic Church had suppressed. This entry closes with a description of how, when he asked the woman if she was Saint Catherine, a halo appeared over her head.
