Summary
"Satan’s Interviews – Death": Death encourages Satan to move on from Jacob, leaving him to his grief. “The heart weary of its grief desires forgetfulness” (132). Satan argues that it is long past time for Jacob to move past grief and death – he has been moving through his life unawares, has begun writing stories, and perhaps could write a novel. “Gag me,” Death comments.
"At the Clinic – Ferrigno": As the muscular orderly Ferrigno leads him to the counselor’s office, Jacob has sexual fantasies about being with him, fantasies that Satan encourages. Then, as Ferrigno (who sees Jacob looking at him and confesses that he is from Iraq) shows him into the counselor’s office, Jacob glimpses a tattoo on the man’s wrist that suggests he is a dominant leather man in the same way as the man in the bath-house was...
