New York City
New York City is the most populous city in the United States. It is the city of residence for Nathan Zuckerman. Much of the novel takes place in New York City, although Zuckerman is not portrayed as out in the city very often except for visits to doctors. Zuckerman is portrayed as spending most of his time in his apartment, either reading, attempting to write, or spending time with various women. There is a sharp contrast between the lively social aspects of New York City and Zuckerman’s habit of spending much of his time in his apartment. Zuckerman’s habit is portrayed as partially due to his chronic pain, but also partially due to a hermit-like disposition.
