Summary
Zuckerman’s flight to Chicago takes off, and he manages his pain with alcohol and pain medication. After initiating a conversation with the passenger next to him, Zuckerman introduces himself as a publisher of pornography and says that his name is Milton Appel. He says that he publishes a pornography magazine called “Lickety Split.” There is a lull in their conversation, and Zuckerman sits silently thinking about his days as an undergraduate at the University of Chicago. He remembers those days with great fondness. He recalls his youthful energy and the sense of purpose he derived from his classes and extracurricular activities. He then reinitiates the conversation with the man sitting next to him. Still pretending to be a pornographer named Milton Appel, he recounts a detailed backstory in which he began publishing “Lickety Split” after running a sex club for several years...
