Chapter Thirty-Seven, The Dunes Summary
The daemons come swooping back to Will and Lyra, but it is not the happy reunion that all have craved. Pan tells Lyra that Serafina is guiding the gyptians to the world of the Mulefa. Will's daemon turns into a cat and tells Will his name. Then the daemons explain about Dust and what makes it leak and flow away: Will's knife. Every time he cuts, the Dust leaks and heads towards the abyss. Therefore every opening must be closed, and either Will must live in Lyra's world or Lyra in Will's. But the daemons do not know that people cannot live a full life in any world but their own. Will and Lyra try to work it out, try to figure out some way they can be together, maybe by opening a window and shutting it...
