Chapter Twenty-Eight, Midnight Summary

Lord Asriel lands the intention craft and Mrs. Coulter is no longer a prisoner and free to move about on her own, but she is very weary and cold. She calls for the alethiometrist who tells her Lyra is alive and yet in the world of the dead, and escaped the bomb. Mrs. Coulter is relieved and exhausted, but cannot sleep.

Lord Asriel and King Ogunwe see the Clouded Mountain in the distance. The Regent, Metatron, is directing its passage and now rules the kingdom. Lord Asriel says Metatron will be in charge of everything, and if his forces win, there will be a "permanent Inquisition" at all times, forever.
