Chapter Twenty, Climbing Summary
Mary climbs high into the trees. She needs an observation post to find out what is happening to the sraf. Fortunately, she knows something about climbing and is able to run and knot her ropes in a safe manner. The Mulefa have turned her two panes of amber glass into a true spyglass by constructing a tube to hold the lenses. Mary looks at the flow of the sraf and notices that it is flowing out to sea. It is not falling into the open flowers of the trees to fertilize them. Therefore, explains Mary, the sraf has changed, not the trees. She reports her findings to the Mulefa in a large meeting attended by many of the people she has not seen before. She asks them to help her construct a platform so she can stay up there...
