Chapter Nineteen, Lyra and Her Death Summary
The city where the dead pass through is a depressing place, but the dead people seem eager to arrive . Lyra and Will are stopped by someone who is alive, just like they are. He is dressed in an old business suit and explains that since they are alive, they must go to a waiting area. He tells them that the dead must cross water to go to their final destination and he directs the party of the living to another part of the city. He holds out papers and Will takes them. The dragonflies are tired, so they ride on Will's rucksack and the spies sit on Lyra's shoulders.
Another man looks at their papers (even though the papers have nothing coherent written on them), and directs them on. There are strange groups...
