The Amber Spyglass is the third book in the His Dark Materials trilogy, which tells the story of Lyra of Jordan College in another world's version of Oxford, her friend Will from our world, and Lord Asriel's revolt against the Kingdom of Heaven.

The book opens in a restful and natural outdoor setting. It is a shaded valley high up in the mountains, near the snow. A fresh, cold stream runs down the mountain and the air is full of the sound of water, birds, and tree branches moving in the wind. The sun filters in through the leaves and needles of the trees and the air is often damp with mist.
