Sookie is a Southern woman who was raised to respect her ancestors and southern tradition. Her eccentric mother's life-long pressure for her to achieve high society status has left her feeling inadequate, insignificant, and unimportant. Sookie grew up worrying about her ability to live up to the Simmons family name. At age 59, however, she receives a registered letter containing her adoption papers. Suddenly, Sookie's life changes. She is exasperated to learn that she is already 60 instead and that no father was listed on her birth certificate. Without notice, Sookie finds herself a year older, illegitimate, and adopted.
