Summary
“Samba, For a Time You Were Mine,” begins with Dores’s titular song lyrics lamenting the straying from and feeling of loss of samba. In Chapter 13, Dores acknowledges that music takes away the limits of physicality. The “real music” she experienced as a young woman pulls her into the past (304). She continues to feel the burden of Senhor Pimentel’s fate. The music, although painful to listen to, drowns out the voice of doubt and negativity that Senhor Pimentel instilled in her as a young woman. Back then, it drove her to become hyper-focused and overzealous.
