Chapter 3 Summary

In Chapter 3, Julia and Hanna run outside, but cannot detect any immediate changes. Inside the house, Julia's mother is taking stock of all of their emergency supplies. Hanna decides to go home. She is afraid that her mother is worried. By watching the television news, Julia's family learns that the Earth's rotation is beginning to slow down. The family forgets about Julia's soccer game.

Julia's mother becomes increasingly more worried about what might happen to the Earth. Julia's father seems to be disturbed more by his wife's worrying than by what is happening with the world. He tries to distract Julia by suggesting that they go and kick around a soccer ball but they stop playing when they lose the ball. Julia asks him if he thinks the birds know there is something amiss with nature. Her mother calls out to them that...
