Point of View
This novel uses a third-person narrative point of view that shifts focus between each of the author’s main characters. This allows the author to effectively maintain an intimate view of a relatively large cast of main characters, and in a sense, cast them all as protagonists in their own right. One quality of this novel is that it does have a wide range of characters, including both starring roles and supporting roles. The narrator has an omniscient view of the starring characters: Ozi Leitman, the Morgans, and the Luberts. But when the supporting characters appear, we only see them through the limited perspective of the starring characters. This is key to understanding and appreciating the author’s choice of narrative style and is how the author differentiates between the main and the supporting characters.
