Summary
Chapter 29 is titled “Punch and Whisky.” For much of the next day, Hernandez is overly apologetic to Liz, who at first keeps her distance. Later, however, she starts preparing an expansive feast for Hernandez and the rest of the people at the Fort. Her plans include serving an alcoholic punch, for which China cuts a great deal of citrus fruit. China also comforts Estreya, who seems to have been traumatized somewhat by being forced to spend time with the wilder dogs in the Fort. China assures him he will always be allowed to stay with her, and he falls into comfortable sleep immediately. Meanwhile, Liz continues to make punch, and also feeds Hernandez some of her good Scotch whisky to get him in a susceptible mood. As the preparations continue, Liz reveals her plan to China.
