Summary

Chapter 15 is titled “Suspended in the Air.” China wakes up late on the morning after the storm, having had a bad dream of her childhood with La Negra and El Negro. As she lies in bed and thinks, China recalls being beaten by El Negra for laziness, and being told that her mother probably got pregnant as a result of an affair with her boss. She then realizes that she has never really thought about finding her parents, and resolves to do so. She falls back asleep. When she wakes up again, she finds the animals all struggling in the mud that remains after the rainstorm. She creates a plan to take care of the animals, and works with Liz and Rosario, now referred to as Rosa, to make sure the cattle and the horses all get food. That afternoon...
