Summary
The doctor checked on the nurse, concluding that she would be fine. Luella then returned upstairs to check on the baby. When she checked his temperature, she realized that he had died. There was a funeral, but Luella refused to accept the tragedy; she was worried about what would “become of” (132) her, so she was in denial. Just then, Doctor Moon appeared, reminding her to take care of her husband. He then told her to accept the baby’s death. She eventually did, and Doctor Moon left. Luella, with new clarity, realized that she was no longer tied down. She packed her bags with the intention of leaving, and she planned to tell her husband the news about the baby just before she left.
