Open hotel window
In the opening scene of the novel, when young Lulu Camden nearly falls out of the open window at the Langham Hotel in London, the open window appears to symbolize nothing -- it is a simple accident. Thus, the open window represents the contempt that Mr. Camden has for Lulu and Luther, who are not actually his blood relations.
Bamboo poles
To Bailey's dismay, Melinda wants to include a number of vertical bamboo poles in the renovations to the Dakota (190-191).
