Summary
In Chapter 9, which begins Day Two, the narrator is awakened by a clanging. He has been moved during the night to a small room in the basement. He thinks the footman is responsible for the move. He climbs the staircase to the entrance hall and opens the front door to find Sebastian Bell standing there. The narrator tries to make sense of what he is seeing. He watches as Daniel comes down the staircase and tries to calm Sebastian, just like he did the day before. When the narrator looks in the mirror, he sees burn scars on his face and realizes he has awakened as the butler.
