Summary
In Chapter 39, Potter (the reporter) is waiting when Devine leaves work. She shouts “lurid” questions, clearly made as accusations while expecting no answer. When she follows, he finally turns and asks, “do you deny taking me prisoner in your news van while attempting to coerce me into giving you a scoop because you said you wanted to get away from shitty Channel Forty-Four and make it to the big league?” (226). The cameraman is laughing and cannot hold the camera still. When Potter says, “How dare you,” Devine says he feels exactly the same. Potter does not follow. At Ewes's house, Mrs. Ewes tells Devine Ewes had the abortion in December. Devine says he could not have been the father because he met Ewes after that.
