Summary
In Chapter 8, Devine returns home. He has a BMW motorcycle – his only extravagant purchase – in the garage next to Tapshaw's car. He drives to Cowl's house and then follows when Cowl drives his Bugatti to town.
In Chapter 9, Devine has been near Cowl only once when he welcomed Devine's group of “burners” to the company. It was widely known that Cowl paid $20,000 for custom-tailored suits. Cowl had told Devine's group about his poor upbringing, though the family had gained and lost a fortune before Cowl came of age, went to college, and partnered with Anne Comely to build this business.
