Tricia followed the procedures. She told our RA, she told the dorm leader, she told her advisory leader, and she went to the counseling center. But nothing happened. Because nothing was ever going to happen. Because Colin matters more to you—to Emlen—than Tricia does.

Importance: Beatrice argues she had to do something to punish Colin because she believed the school was not going to punish him. She added that she believed the officials of the school valued Colin more than they valued Tricia. Beatrice is correct about the value placed on men. However, it is not only at school that men are valued higher than women, but also in the world in general.
She dressed to please herself, and to feel comfortable, and if these boys believed that her body was an object that existed for their pleasure, she’d be happy to tell them otherwise.
