Diana Starling aka Diana Scalzi Carmody
Diana Scalzi is 15 years old and working as a mother’s helper on Cape Cod when she is raped by Hal, then known as Poe. Diana’s life is destroyed by the rape because she is no longer able to make good grades in school. She fails out of college and is unable to keep any job but a custodial job. Like many rape victims, Diana believes the rape was her fault. She also believes that she is worthless as a result of what has happened to her and does not deserve to be happy.
Diana’s actions are the catalyst for the action in the novel. Nearly thirty years after her rape Diana identifies the man who raped her when she sees his picture. Because the #MeToo movement is at its height, Diana believes she owes it to future generations of women...
