Banquet at Belbury Summary
At the banquet, Mark feels happy and hopeful. He notices that the tramp is seated between Mr. Jules and Mr. Wither. Behind him stands Merlin. Jules gets up to deliver a speech to the crowd. No one takes notice of his words until they stop making sense. Jules thinks he is speaking normally, but the words coming out of his mouth are all gibberish. Wither rises to stop him from speaking, and begins to make apologies for their figurehead. However, his words come out garbled and meaningless as well. The dinner guests begin to whisper to one another, but their words are gibberish as well. Even when Frost tries to write a note the words do not make sense. The room erupts in chaos as everyone tries to regain order. Suddenly there is a shot, and Jules is dead...
