Adam Schumann
Adam Schumann is the veteran whose story Finkel tells most completely. He follows Adam from the time that he begins his third deployment at FOB Rustamiyah in Iraq through the time he completes an extended program to help him deal with PTSD and a TBI he received during that third deployment.
Adam is the husband of Saskia, and the father of Jaxon and Zoe. Among his memories from his third deployment, Adam remembers a friend telling him that a Humvee getting blown up would not have happened if Adam had been with them. Adam’s best friend, James, was killed in that attack. He also remembers another man, Emory, getting shot in the head. Adam carried Emory on his back down the stairs because he was afraid Emory would fall off the gurney on which they were carrying him.
