Summary
In the Prologue, Finkel focuses on Adam’s final deployment when he went from feeling as if he were on a typical deployment to wishing he could be killed in battle like his friends had been killed. No one knew that Adam was having such troubles until he asked for help. He was sent home on a special Red Cross transport to a wife who admitted she was scared of what he might do.
In Chapter 1, two years after he was sent home from combat, Adam drops his four day old infant son when he accidentally goes to sleep while holding him.
