“Thank You For Waiting” takes place in a conventional airport waiting area. This is established from the opening lines: “At this moment in time we’d like to invite / First Class passengers only to board the aircraft” (Lines 1-2). The poem takes a mundane environment which most readers will be familiar with and uses it as an entry point to communicate a deeper theme. An airport is a place which is fundamentally divided by socioeconomic class, and the poet exploits this to surrealist effect.
