Flashlights, Matches, and Clothing
The items that Garth, Jim, and Jenny have when they arrive at Amalickiah's camp is symbolic of the fact that the three are out of their own time. Amalickiah and his people are amazed at the items and take some of them, including the clothing.
Prayer
Prayer is a symbol of a character's relationship with God, and there are several examples of situations in which prayer is highly effective. Jim's grandmother retires to her room to pray and fast for long periods whenever she is worried about the members of her family. Jim prays fervently when he feels certain he and Garth are going to be sacrificed to the sun god, and though there is no immediately answer, he feels peaceful.
