Cody, Wyoming
Jim and Garth live in Cody, Wyoming, when they first become friends. They have been in school together for awhile before they forge a relationship. Jim feels this is a boring town, which may be partly why he is eager to follow Garth to see the mural Garth found on the banks of a nearby river. Jim's father is principal of the school at Cody. Jim describes several of the landmarks in Cody, including a heritage center and a bowling alley. The novel opens in Cody, but most of the events take place in other places, including Frost Cave and an ancient land they reach by traveling through that cave. Cody and Frost Cave are both part of the modern-day settings of the novel.
