Summary
In Chapter 9, Jim says he expected this to be a nicer place, based on his studies. Garth responds that there were some brutal times. There are 13 people waiting to be sacrificed to the sun god. Jim is angry that Garth spoke his mind but admits it is not really his fault. Jim begins to pray and a few hours later, feels at peace. He is awakened by Middoni who killed two of the priests and announces he has “changed my allegiance” (Location 1550). Middoni releases Garth as well but Jim realizes the others, though frightened, see sacrificing themselves as their duty. Middoni leads them away from the camp. He reveals some of his past, including that his father became a Christian, leading to the family's current situation as outcasts.
