Krieg Processing Plant
Krieg Processing Plant is the setting where Marcos works. Throughout the novel, Marcos is constantly coming from and going to the plant. Although his work at the processing plant disturbs and repulses him, Marcos tells himself that he keeps the job because "he's the best and they pay him accordingly, because he doesn't know how to do anything else, and because his father's health depends on it" (14). Therefore, throughout Part I, Marcos is often haunted by the gruesome nature of his vocation. Oftentimes, scenes and images from the plant arise in Marcos's daydreams or nightmares.
In Chapters 10 - 15 of Part I, Marcos gives two potential new hires a tour of the plant. He leads the applicants from one room to the next, forcing them to observe the horrors of the slaughtering process. These chapters simultaneously convey the details of the process to the reader.
