Summary
In Chapter 17, Marcos checks on the female. Although he should wash her, Marcos “has something more important to do” (82). He drinks some whiskey and drags the cot outside. After chopping it up, he lights it on fire. He sees the female “watching him” (83). He considers destroying her, too. Instead, he cuts her rope. Lying on the grass, he “no longer cares” about anything (83). The female seems to be crying, but Marcos knows she cannot understand “what’s happening” (83).
In Chapter 18, Marcos wakes up. His dream returns “with terrifying clarity” (84). In the dream, he is walking naked “into an empty room” (84). His father is present. A wolf is eating his son. He tries to get to them, but cannot. Sergio and Pedro are there, too. Then Cecilia appears “with a black stone” (85). After opening his father’s chest, Cecilia places the stone...
