Importance: This quote serves as a sort of rallying cry for the Nation of Islam in general, as it seeks to unite Black people across the country who have been wronged by the white status quo. Memphis herself has a difficult history with white people in her personal life because of her dark skin; this being the 1970s (although this still happens to the present day, of course), she is constantly being prejudiced against because of the fact her skin is darker. That is what drives her to join the Nation of Islam in the first place -- they preach about the virtues of having dark skin.
