Summary
Chapter 3 "Brotherly Love" begins with Carter’s point of view, Pearl’s supervisor in the San Francisco office. He is ruminating on a new hire in Apricity, the manager at the Santa Clara office, a job he would have applied for if he had known about it. Carter meets the new hire, Thomas Igness, at an Apricity team-building event in Napa. Pearl also had to attend the two-day event, despite trying to get out due to her son’s condition.
Carter and Thomas share the same smarmy and slightly derogatory sense of humor, and they both love the attention of their employees. Carter lies and tells him he had an affair with Pearl, but when his wife became pregnant, he ended it.
