Introduction through Chapter Five Summary
David Beck and his wife, Elizabeth Parker Beck, make the drive to Lake Charmaine for the anniversary of their first kiss. The lake property belongs to David's grandfather and is very secluded. That first kiss had happened when the couple were just twelve years old. They go to the tree with their initials are carved along with a slash carved for each of the twelve years that had passed in the meantime. After the ritual, they return to the lake where they undress. David dives in the water and swims out some distance when he hears Elizabeth scream. Realizing that she's being attacked, he rushes back to the dock, but as he tries to see what's happening, he is attacked as well. After another hit or two, David falls into the water and passes out.
