Crosby

The town of Crosby, Maine is symbolic of interconnection. Although all of the characters feel lonely and isolated, they are all linked by this common setting. The town unifies them and offers them unexpected opportunities for friendship and love.

Lucy's Plant

Lucy's plant, Little Annie, is symbolic of survival. Throughout the novel, Lucy worries that the plant will not make it after she transplants it. She gives Bob frequent updates on the plant's health and rejoices when it does well. The plant therefore symbolizes Lucy's ability to adapt to Crosby and to survive her life's challenges despite all of the changes she is facing.
