Summary
In Book 4, Chapter 1, Jim has been miserable since Helen’s death. Upset and alone, he visits his siblings in Maine. Bob and Susie are surprised by how open he is during his stay.
In Chapter 2, Lucy visits Olive and Olive tells her “a love story” (221). Lucy is unsure what to make of it and Olive reminds her they are sharing stories about people “and the lives they lead” (225).
In Chapter 3, during one of their walks in May, Bob tells Lucy about Matt’s case. “[W]alking and talking,” Bob and Lucy feel happy (227). When Lucy starts telling Bob about her daughters, Margaret calls to say one of her parishioners is trying to get her fired. He abruptly ends the walk and returns home to find Margaret sobbing.
