Summary

In Book 2, Chapter 1, in March, a hiker finds Gloria’s body in a local quarry. Few people know Gloria’s story. She was born in northern Maine and was sexually abused by her uncle as a child. She had her first son, Thomas, when she was a teenager. She later moved to Shirley Falls where she worked and lived at a hotel where the manager abused her, too. Then she met and married Walter Beach, with whom she had Diana and Matt. Her journals prove how unhappy she was throughout her life. She was also bullied by the students at the school where she worked.

Bob is smoking in secret when Diana Beach calls and asks him to represent Matt. On his way to Matt’s, Bob stops at Susie’s where she, Bob, and Gerry discuss the case.
