Summary
The day of the dance, Charmaine pretended she did not feel well. When her husband left for the party, she put on a cheerful cotton dress and drove to Mr. Gonzalez’s house. He looked surprised and annoyed when she opened the door. He told her that a bomb had gone off at the club, and the Cuban military was strafing the town with bombs to drive out rebels. When she declared that she wanted to leave her husband for him, he laughed and told her that he had only slept with her to cuckold her husband, his rival at the mine. Realizing that Mr. Gonzalez had only felt hatred for her, she sobbed on the drive home.
