On Tuesday, September 5, Paul and his mom are carrying groceries inside when Erik arrives home with Arthur. Erik tells her that Mike Costello had been touching the goal post when the afternoon lightning storm hit and that he'd been killed. Paul's mom tries to reach Paul's father but he doesn't answer. Then he calls from the hospital with basically the same information Erik had given. Paul hears Arthur and Erik outside talking about Mike. They are making fun of the fact that Mike's hair was burned from one side of his head and laughing about the actions of Joey, who was present at the football practice. Joey had run to Mike's body, trying to take the shoes off his feet. Paul can't imagine why Erik and Arthur are laughing about Mike's death but then realizes that the two of them will...
