Civil's roadtrip is symbolic of healing. Civil decides to take the trip south when she hears that India is sick at the start of the novel. She uses the trip to visit the places and people of her past. However, the trip also helps Civil to emotionally confront her unresolved unrest over her mistakes. It ultimately leads to healing and personal growth.

The Montgomery Family Planning Clinic is symbolic of power and control. Civil wants to believe the clinic is a platform by which she can help others and create social change. However, she soon realizes that the clinic is using its role in the community to manipulate the bodies of impoverished Black and Brown women and girls.
