Montgomery, Alabama
The majority of the novel is set in Montgomery, Alabama. This is where Civil grows up and where she lives throughout her young adulthood. The portions of the novel set in 1973 are primarily located in Montgomery. To the rest of the nation and to "the world, Montgomery [is] the Cradle of Dixie" (267). However, to Civil, the city is home. Civil knows that in one sense, the city protects some Black individuals' "education and jobs and ability to make noise" (267). However, over the course of the novel, she realizes that in the same city, "poor Black folks [go] hungry or [are] humiliated by their employers" (267). In spite of these socioeconomic and sociopolitical inconsistencies, Civil remains attached to the place. Indeed, these inconsistencies of her home inspire Civil to invest in the place more concertedly.
