Chapter 49 Summary

Mauss in on Resting Cloud during the storm. The ship is set adrift by the storm and Mauss is knocked unconscious. The ship collides with Jeff Cooper's The Boston Princess. The sampans and junks are hit by the drifting boat, causing hundreds of Chinese to drown. Resting Cloud grounds heavily on shore. Jeff checks his ship and tells Shevaun that they are safe as long as the moorings hold.

On shore, Glessing has his arm cut off from a falling flagpole that went through the building. Tess's dress is set on fire and she is burned and unconscious. Culum tends to the injured Glessing. He cleans the wound and cauterizes it with burning coals.
