Chapter 48 Summary

Dirk reaches the lorcha and makes it to Happy Valley. One of the sailors is killed when he falls off of the lorcha. He runs to the factory, telling his crew and others to follow him. All of them run to the factory for safety. Dirk is surprised to find Horatio there. He came on the boat with Monsey at Whalen's orders. Dirk assigns quarters to the men and goes to see May-may. He makes sure they are all right and tells them they have people staying in the factory. He returns to his guests, including naval personnel.

Chapter 48 Analysis

The weather continues to worsen and the barometric pressure is rapidly falling, indicating a typhoon. Dirk brings the crew and naval personnel into his Happy Valley factory for safety during the storm. He learns that Whalen has arrived in Macao and sent Monsey...
