Chapter 32 Summary

The first horse race is held five days later. Building is already taking place in the new town. Wages are bid up due to the speed that everyone wants things built in and this caused a labor shortage. The Noble House employs three thousand workers alone. The day of the race marks two weeks since May-May and Dirk moved out of the Happy Valley house. May-may is not feeling well and follows Dirk's advice to stay in bed.

Dirk goes to the racetrack. He is worried that he has not yet received a letter from Culum. He meets Zergeyev and they talk with Shevaun, Brock, and others. Dirk is only half paying attention to the conversation as he is worrying about May-may. The archduke has the honor of starting the first race and leaves with Blore.
