Chapter 26 Summary
Summer is always a bad time for the Europeans who come down with many illnesses, many due to the lack of sanitation and their own misunderstanding of what causes various diseases. Hong Kong continues to be developed and many Europeans are living there now. Since British law do not use torture, many Chinese criminals come from the mainland and the other islands. The town of Queens Town has a fever epidemic, which Robb tells Culum is malaria. Culum and Dirk are at the Canton settlement where they learn that Robb's daughter, Karen, is sick with the disease.
Culum and Dirk discuss the situation. Dirk makes an appointment with Jin-qua and he and the archduke are invited to dinner. Culum and Dirk argue about moving their operations out of Happy Valley. Dirk says they have too much invested. Culum is in favor of expelling...
