Chapter 22 Summary
Culum is in the receiving line at the ball, receiving guests with his father and uncle. He feels jealous when he sees Mary Sinclair talking with Glessing. The army and the navy provided the two bands for the evening. Robb is introduced to Tess Brock and it is love at first sight for him. Liza is pleased at the reaction and Dirk is thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of a match between the two.
Dirk and Quance are looking over the ladies and their ball gowns. There is no chance of Maureen Quance meeting Aristotle since she is on one of Dirk's boats without any means of transportation to land. Dirk introduces the archduke to Tess and asks them to lead the first dance. Shevaun and her uncle arrive at that moment and are also introduced to the Russian. The dancing begins...
