Summary

Chapter 1

Seth Hubbard is found hanging from a sycamore tree by an employee he asked to meet him there. The police come and cut Seth down before finding a suicide note at his house.

Chapter 2

Jake, as usual, stops at a local café for breakfast Monday morning before going to work. At the café, he hears about the suicide of Seth Hubbard.

Chapter 3

Jake’s secretary, Roxy, brings in the mail when she arrives, late, at the office. Among the bills and other correspondence, Jake finds an envelope from Seth Hubbard. Jake, understanding the importance of this item, takes it directly to his office and carefully opens it. A letter and a handwritten will are inside. The will leaves the bulk of Seth’s estate to his maid, Lettie Lang, and the letter instructs Jake to fight for the will at all costs...
