Chapter 33, The Distant Drum Summary
After Hazel leaves, Doc sits and thinks about Suzy while listening to his middle voice which wants him to analyze the situation telling him he was fooling himself. Doc tells himself that he will lose his freedom if he is with her, that she has a temper, and that she is illiterate. Suddenly Doc's thoughts are interrupted when he hears the boiler door slam and sees Joseph and Mary outside the boiler. Doc runs down and beats Joseph and Mary telling him to stay away from Suzy. After Joseph and Mary agrees, Doc and him go to the grocery and discuss what happened, Joseph and Mary tells Doc how Suzy rejected him. Joseph and Mary offers to help Doc get Suzy back and tells him where to get her some flowers.
