The Palace Flophouse had been named by one of "the boys" Hazel, it was a fourteen by twenty-eight foot room that contained a grandfather clock, a cast iron stove and their beds. Gay's bed was left exactly the same as the day he left as a memorial for him. Cannery row had several pre-parties going so that when the party at the flophouse started it would be in full-swing from the time it starts. Everyone had dressed up, Mack and the boys (everyone but Hazel) were trees, Fauna was a witch, and the girls from the Bear Flag were dressed in nice dresses like bridesmaids, and Hazel was dressed by Joe Elegant in long underwear prince costume with the seat the underwear cut out exposing a bulls-eye that had been painted...
