That night Doc can't sleep and Wide Ida notices that his light is on so she takes some new liquor she purchased for cheap over to him to analyze for safety. Wide Ida then asks him about his "trouble" that everyone is talking about to see if there is anything she can do to help. Doc realizes that his friends are pitying him and that "pity and contempt are brothers." Doc tells himself "I will get the spring tides at La Jolla" as his lowest voice tells him that "Somewhere there's warmth". Doc then writes that "Parallels must be related."
